Abstract
QUISBERT MAMANI, Katerin Estefany. PARTICIPATION OF DOMESTIC SERVITUDE IN THE INDIAN UPRISING OF 1781 IN LA PAZ. Rev. Fuent. Cong. [online]. 2019, vol.13, n.62, pp. 19-29. ISSN 1997-4485.
During the late eighteenth century the region of La Paz endured deep transformations: social, administrative, political, economic and cultural changes that modified the contemporary society. Such changes affected several socioeconomic sectors, whose discontent erupted in numerous uprisings that culminated in the great rebellion of 1781. The population of La Paz, and serfdom in particular, were actors in these demonstrations. Women dedicated to domestic servitude were not isolated from these shocking events: they should have heard the rumors and comments of their bosses, muleteers, merchants and other people, including slaves; they shared the situation of general malaise that was lived in the streets and in the houses; some women met to comment freely on these facts, effectively fulfilling various roles and participating in these struggles, with a performance incorporated into their daily role. They were active in the intermediary spaces between the public and the private. This type of relationship allowed the women to claim that they worked for their well-being, but they were in opposition to the abuses and mistreatment by their employers, which is why they collaborated in the moments of tension that the city of La Paz experienced at the end of the 18th century.
