Abstract This text is aimed at analyzing the relationships between (physical and virtual) bibliographic and documentary patrimonial collections, and local history. First, public libraries' current perspectives and their role in the construction of citizenship are stated, as well as their role in the creation of new participants in the local and global communities. In a second instance, an analysis is provided about the ways that those perspectives can be linked to the collections of public libraries as agents of local identity.
